This idyllic single-storey cottage on the River Bourne invites you to relax, unwind and watch the huge range of wildlife and birds in the garden, including woodpeckers, warblers, song thrush, owls, muntjac and hedgehogs on a summer's evening. A small brood of friendly free range hens will be found rummaging in the borders. If you can tear yourself away, step straight onto the Monarch's Way where it crosses the Bourne at Winterbourne Dauntsey (0.5 miles) or take a short drive to Figsbury Ring (4 miles) for a breezy hillfort loop and sunset views. Gaze upon the Neolithic wonder of the world, Stonehenge (8 miles), before heading over to Langford Lakes for a hot chocolate and birdwatching session. The city of Salisbury is just 5.5 miles away from the property, where visitors can admire its captivating cathedral and discover the one of the four original Magna Carta manuscripts. There's also plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs to choose from, including a twice-weekly market offering local crafts.

Upon entering, drop boots and coats in the porch, then move into the hallway to the bedrooms. Continue to the lounge/diner, where you can curl up on the sofa, watch a film on the Smart TV or play board games around the four-person dining table while admiring the beautiful garden views. The kitchen is next door and is fitted with all you could possibly need to enjoy fuss-free self-catering, including a washing machine and a breakfast table. Once it's time to retire for the evening, move through to the bedrooms, where you can enjoy a great night's sleep. The king-size room has a Smart TV and an en-suite shower room with shower seat and handrail. There is a further king-size room with zip-and-link beds, Smart TV and access to the garden. Finishing off the home is the lavish bathroom with a corner bath and a WC.

The true star of this cottage is its riverside garden and the everyday wildlife show that comes with it. Pack your binoculars and settle in as birds, mammals and amphibians drift in and out of the River Bourne, which runs right behind the house. With a little patience, you may spot otters, deer, kingfishers and owls, and there's even a resident swan who often makes an appearance. Enjoy the sounds of the water from the raised riverside platform with seating, or relax and unwind in the tended garden, where you can fire up the BBQ and stay outside into the evening. There is private parking for two cars.

We spent a week at Duck Cottage in April, and the first thing to say is that the setting is absolutely beautiful. The garden is a real highlight, leading down to a chalk stream river where you can sit on a platform with a drink, feed the swans, and watch the birds. The garden itself is full of life chickens, pheasants, doves, deer wandering througRead moreh, and even hedgehogs at night. The birdsong is constant and incredibly peaceful. The cottage was the perfect size for our family (two adults and two children, aged three and five). The children absolutely loved the wildlife and were also very pleased to have access to Disney+ in the evenings. It felt like a very safe space, where they could move around and play freely without worry. Inside, the house is clean, bright, and very comfortable. The beds were excellent, and the facilities were just right for us. There are two bathrooms, including a huge bath (big enough for the whole family- just!) and an ensuite shower room off the main bedroom. The kitchen is well equipped, with a fridge, small dishwasher, and everything needed for cooking all appliances worked perfectly. The building itself is part of a charming old thatched cottage, full of character, set within lovely grounds. Theres a secure, gated parking area. Its tucked away on a quiet lane, though worth noting its a bit of a walk to shops. That said, there is a pub nearby, and supermarkets are just a short drive away. The location is fantastic for exploring the area. We visited Avebury, Old Sarum, Stonehenge, and Salisbury Cathedral. If youre heading into Salisbury with children, Id recommend using the park and ride, as parking can be tricky. Even with changeable weather, there was plenty to do. Spring made it especially special, with lambs in the fields, rabbits everywhere, and the countryside coming to life. The owner, Claire, was very helpful always available to answer questions and offer suggestions. Shes also a talented artist, and her work is displayed throughout the cottage. Theres even the option to take art sessions with her, which wed love to try on a future visit. Food-wise, while shops arent within easy walking distance, grocery delivery worked well, and there are several supermarkets nearby, including Lidl, Waitrose, and Aldi. Theres also a small playground just around the corner, which was perfect for the children. We also enjoyed walking to Figsbury Ring, where its fun to explore and spot interesting flints and stones. Overall, we had a fantastic stay at Duck Cottage. We have already recommended it to friends and family. If youre looking for a relaxing, nature-filled getaway, with lots to do and explore then this is Duck Cottage is a perfect choice. 10/10. Hide
